Metal braces have been used for generations to treat the most complex bite and alignment issues. A system of brackets and wires move your teeth into position to create a healthy, beautiful smile. If you’re ready to fix your alignment issues, it’s normal to have some concerns. Don’t worry. Here’s what you can expect your braces to feel like.
Getting Your Braces Put On
Your dentist may have previously placed spacers to allow room for bands to be put on your back molars. They will remove the spacers and apply your bands to your teeth using glue. These are the anchor points for your arch wire. You don’t have to worry about any pain while your braces are applied to your teeth. You can expect the process to include:
- Cleaning and Drying Your Teeth
- Applying Glue
- Attaching brackets to Teeth
- Connecting the Arch Wires
Your First Week with Braces
Your teeth may feel heavy or bulky at first. It can take a week or two to adjust to having them in your mouth, but in no time at all, you may forget they are there. The insides of your lips and cheeks may become slightly irritated from the brackets, but calluses will form in time. It’s normal for your mouth to be tender for a few days. It’s a sign your treatment is working. Here are a few tips to help make your first week with braces more comfortable:
- Manage Any Discomfort: Take an over-the-counter anti-inflammatory or pain reliever to manage your discomfort. Rinsing your mouth with salt water can also ease inflammation and tenderness.
- Watch What You Eat: Follow your dentist’s dietary instructions. You may want to eat soft foods for the first week or two. Choose foods that require minimal chewing to reduce tenderness.
- Brush and Floss: Brush and floss your teeth after every meal, in the morning, and at night as instructed by your dentist.
- Use Dental Wax: Apply dental wax to brackets or wires that are irritating the insides of your mouth. It will help to reduce friction.
Appointments for Adjustments
You’ll need to visit your dentist every few weeks to have your braces adjusted. This allows your teeth to be moved in small increments to correct bite and alignment abnormalities. Here’s what you can expect:
- Bending Your Arch Wire
- Exchanging the Arch Wires
- Attaching Elastic Rubber Bands
The average treatment takes 18 to 24 months. You can ensure there aren’t any delays in your treatment plan by following your dentist’s instructions and maintaining your regular appointments for adjustments. You will have a stunning smile to be proud of.
