To work properly, your dentures need to have a secure fit. But in some cases, with time, the shape of your mouth or your prosthetics changes, making them more prone to slipping out when you chew or speak.
Thankfully, temporary solutions like denture adhesives were designed to remedy this problem. While you should never rely on them in the long-term, they can be very helpful until you can see your dentist to either repair or replace your false teeth.
Here’s some detailed information about how to use denture adhesive, and what you should do if your dentures stop fitting correctly.
Which Denture Adhesive is Best?
The good news about selecting a denture adhesive is that they all work equally well. The type you choose is a matter of personal preference, as each has their own unique pros and cons. Here’s how to properly use each type.
Denture Adhesive Cream
- Completely clean and dry your dentures.
- Apply the adhesive cream directly onto the inside of your prosthetic in short strips. Be sure not to get any on the edges. Apply carefully so it doesn’t ooze out from the sides when you put your dentures on.
- Rinse your mouth well.
- Press your denture into place, holding it firmly for several seconds. Bite down to secure it into place.
Denture Adhesive Powder
- Clean your dentures thoroughly, leaving them wet.
- Spray the denture adhesive powder lightly and evenly on each surface that will touch your gums and the roof of your mouth.
- Rinse out your mouth with water.
- Shake any loose powder from the denture.
- Put your prosthetic in your mouth, biting down to secure it in place.
Denture Adhesive Strips
- Thoroughly clean and dry your denture.
- With clean, dry hands, remove your adhesive strips from their packaging.
- Moisten one strip at a time with water.
- Attach the strips to your dentures as shown in the product directions, keeping them away from the edges of the denture. Do not overlap them. Note that adhesive strips can be torn or cut into shape as needed.
- Rinse your mouth with water.
- Press the denture into place, holding onto it firmly, and bite down on it to obtain a secure hold.
Cleaning Adhesive Off Your Dentures
When you’re done wearing your dentures for the night, swish some warm water in your mouth and gently pull them out. Put them somewhere safe and then use a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently scrub the adhesive off your gums with toothpaste.
Once your mouth is clean, you’re ready to clean your dentures.
Using a different soft-bristled toothbrush, scrub the entire prosthetic with either mild hand soap or denture cleanser. Floss between each tooth and then rinse them well before placing them in a glass of water or denture soak until you are ready to wear them again.
Remember, unless they are brand new, you should not need denture adhesives for them to stay in place. If yours have stopped fitting properly, it’s time to schedule an appointment with your dentist for a relining or replacement pair.
