Facial Fiasco: Why Are My Cheeks Swollen?

It’s normal to feel somewhat anxious if you’ve suddenly developed facial aches or swelling. If you’re unsure of the cause, you might not know what kind of help you need or who to contact. For instance, if your cheeks, jaw, or mouth are sore or distended, you might feel tempted to contact your primary care physician rather than your dentist.

There are several potential reasons for a puffy face that are best handled by an oral healthcare provider, though that’s not always the case. Continue reading to learn about 3 possible reasons for your symptoms and how your emergency dentist can help!

Concern #1:  Tooth Abscess

One common culprit behind throbbing and inflammation is a tooth abscess. This occurs when bacteria from your mouth penetrate the tender nerves and pulp on the inside and cause an infection. Sometimes, this results in a small, fluid-filled sac, or abscess, in your jaw or gums around the root. It only grows more uncomfortable and can impact your gum tissues and jawbone if left unaddressed, so it’s important to contact your dentist right away.

Your provider will likely suggest a root canal to clear out the damaged materials and sanitize your tooth. Then, they’ll fit you with a dental crown to shield your troubled tooth from additional harm while restoring its appearance and functionality.

Concern #2: Infected Salivary Glands

You may already know that your mouth contains salivary glands to produce the fluid that helps you soften your food to be easily swallowed and digested. However, did you know that there are also some located in your head, neck, and face? If they become infected, they can cause mild to severe discomfort and distension.

This can happen because of dehydration, malnutrition, other illnesses like influenza, or a blockage of the gland ducts. Your dentist can prescribe antibiotics to clear it up, or refer you to an appropriate ear, nose, and throat doctor if necessary.

Concern #3: Anaphylaxis

It’s also possible that your facial puffiness has very little to do with your teeth. When having an extreme allergic reaction, for example, you might experience inflammation in addition to other issues like challenges breathing, hives or itchy bumps, a rapid heart rate, nausea or vomiting, or even loss of consciousness.

If you’re experiencing these or other life-threatening symptoms, you should head to the closest emergency room immediately. Your dentist might not have the right instruments or medication to address the issue as quickly as required, and you don’t want to waste time getting help.

If you’re unsure of why your cheeks are puffier than usual, your dentist can help you identify the root cause and refer you to a doctor if they are unable to fix it.
